Paying the bills has never been easy in the open-sewered slums of North Jakarta — the poorest part of Indonesia's capital.

These days, though, things are getting worse for families like Saraswati's. The world's food and financial crises have hit Indonesia, with prices for staples like rice, tofu and cooking oil soaring by more than 25 percent in the past year.

In her neighborhood of Penjaringan, our field teams are building a water-supply system that will make drinking water safer and less expensive.
